Thanks Phillip. Interesting info. I must confess I can't remember ever seeing one.
That is really handy information if you need to info through as to your location when you need assistance.

I once send someone the GPS Co-ordinates of a house on the Vaal dam and he ended up more than a 100km away. I gave the co-ords in degrees minutes seconds and told him yo be careful of the format and he inputted the figures as degrees. If you input 27 50 17.1 as 27.5017 it can make quite a difference.

Hi All, Phillip. Further to the above topic, a little bit more info. What are those strange looking signs every few hundred metres to the side of the road? Travelling between Bloemfontein and Johannesburg [and in fact all national roads] you will find these small signs next to the road with some sort of code on them! Most often they are simply in white concrete little pillars or small signs on posts next to the road.
Few road users are aware of the significance of these markings – and that they can provide important assistance when in distress. The road users should know that in case of emergency he would be able to pinpoint his location to emergency services by providing the detail on the marking closest to him. He/She should be able to find this information by merely moving 100 metres to his/her left or right. On the N4 road from Pretoria to Mozambique these are much bigger and more visible.

Regards
