Bill paves way for e-tolling
Aug 03 2012 09:16
Johannesburg - The cabinet has approved a bill that will pave the way for the implementation of e-tolling on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), according to Business Report.
The transport laws and related matters amendment bill of 2012 had been approved by cabinet and would be tabled for submission to parliament by Transport Minister Ben Martins, the report said.
Cabinet spokesperson Jimmy Manyi reportedly said the legislation had been "necessitated by the development of the GFIP, as well as future plans for the development of road infrastructure".
Wayne Duvenage, leader of the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa), said he had yet to see the bill but it appeared that the government was sending a clear message of its intention to go ahead with e-tolling.
Duvenage said yesterday that the high court in Pretoria will hear arguments in the e-toll case on November 26.
Under the e-toll project, motorists will pay over 35 cents a kilometre to travel on some of Gauteng's freeways.
The project was to have been launched on April 30.
