NUVI 500

#1355

Post by bullet »

I have a NUVI 500 that i bought +- a year ago. The intention was that i could use it in my vehicle for on road use and then also on the boat out at sea because it is waterproof and a dual purpose unit.

My experience has been somewhat disappointing.

My first issue is that the map is not refreshing on screen fast enough so i constantly find you drive but the screen is just blank and then suddenly the map refreshes again.

Another real pain in the butt is that the marine map G2 Bluechart and the Street Maps are on different SD Cards and so you have to take the battery out and swap the sd card for the mapping. Would have been nice to have had both available on the unit at the same time but Garmin tells me this cannot be done for this unit.

There are a lot of other bugs and i would like to find out what other peoples experience has been with this unit

Welcome to the forum. If you have both map sets on separate SD cards that would be a problem. If you have updated to the latest (2012.3) Garmap street maps you could try loading the maps to the internal memory which would allow you to have both maps sets on the unit simultaneously with only one active at a time.

Dankie Jan. The Street maps and the G2 BLuecharts Marine maps are both on seperate SD cards. I have tried to overwrite the Base map with the 2012 Streetmap image file but the unit seemed to get very buggy then, although i initially thought this was the answer. The unit also seemed to be unable to distinguish between road and boat usage even when switching modes (Boat or Car)

As far as i have been able to established based on the IMG files on my unit the following is available on the Nuvi 500

GMAPBMAP.IMG (basemap on the internal memory)
GMAPTZ.IMG (dont know what this is but on the internal memory)
GMAPSUPP.IMG (SD Card map)

What are the implications of using the Garmin Streetmaps to overwrite the Basemap on the unit's internal memory?

Hi bullet,

I stand to be corrected, but nothing stops you from loading one mapset onto the device from your PC and the mapset name is gmapsupp.img on the device. Then install the other (2012.3 or Waterways) onto the memory card also with the name gmapsupp.img. Alternatively, since both mapsets are installed on your PC/Laptop, select all the tiles from 2012.3, change mapsets in BaseCamp/Mapsource to Waterways and then select all the tiles in Waterways and transfer both in one sweep to the device. I think this has been discussed and done before.

I had a look at the operators manual for the Nuvi 500 and you can load maps the internal memory and SD card as with all the other Nuvi's Remember you cannot transfer a mapset from a preloaded SD card to the internal Memory because that will destroy the licence and will render is unusable.

Hi bullet,

True what Jan said there about the maps being on SD cards. My mind slipped a gear there.

@Jan:-

Thanks for the reminder there. I was thinking from a Mapsource perspective.

The Only Way to legally solve this problem is to Purchase New Garmap SSA 2012.3 (better to wait for 2013.1) for R999 next year R349
http://www.garmap.co.za/Catalog/View.as ... 1&tag=maps
The Memory Card Option does not qualify you for discounted price of R349
Purchase the DVD for 20 Bucks
Then you will get PC Version viewable on BaseCamp.
Use Mapinstall to Download Tiles to Internal Memory.

That is assuming that the Nuvi Has Adequate Free Space on Internal Memory (ALL Tiles is close to 400Megs)

Other Issue.

Do Not delete these.

GMAPBMAP.IMG (basemap on the internal memory) BaseMap is Needed for Navigation
GMAPTZ.IMG (dont know what this is but on the internal memory) This is Time Zone Map Needed
Nuvi 3490LMT + Garmin Forerunner 35

Jis Bullit!

Jy het die cream of the crop opgejaag!

Sterkte!
