DEM Version

#1443

Post by MuskieT »

So T4A are not perhaps considering bringing out a DEM version? I am becoming desperate now for a new map set!
Oregon 450 - small, compact, 2xAA batteries lasts, good display, all the necessary technical specs!

Used for: Going on holiday where there is no tarred roads, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Geocaching, Sailing, Running(sometimes) and offcause in the car...

Currently there is no Standalone Dem Map of Southern Africa from any Map Publisher for Sale at any price.
Garmap still sells a Topo Map. Previously Garmap used to sell a Dem but it was discontinued due to lack of interest.
The Nuvi 34/3590 has a Dem Overlay Preloaded. (File Name =Gmapdem.img)

I can see a lot of panicky queries arising from accidently deleting the mapset (gmapdem.img) from the 34/3590, due to the users wanting more space on the device and then realising they have lost their 3D map. Hopefully a system update or reload will be able to fix that or they would have to rely on a good hearted person to provide them with a copy of the file.

It's a blank DEM Overlay, no roads, no Features, no Colour.
So it's pretty useless if you load it on another GPS.
It only works to give you DEM Shading and 3D effect on 3490/3590.
I think That if you lost it GSA would make a plan to put it back ON.
It's not included when you do a City navigator Map Update. (Mine is dated 2010/09/14 and its 92.3 Megs)

If it is just an overlay that runs on top of the existing mapset(s), then all it should contain is the various shadings for the various altitudes, or shading in a specific direction with the digital elevation data to create the illusion of height.
