Updating maps; sticking to Mapsource.
Updating maps; sticking to Mapsource.
I have an old Garmin Nuvi 200, running Mapsource 6.13.7 and SA streetmaps 2009, version 1. You may laugh - I know that is veeeery old. Now I want to update the maps - I looked it up on the Garmap / Garmin website and they quoted R349 for Streetmaps 2013.1 for my registered GPS. Can I trust them that the 2013 maps will actually work on my old GPSr? And I would like to stick to Mapsource for a while because I will need the GPS when I go to Tanzania in a month's time and I do not have the time to get to know Basecamp right now. Is there a way of installing the new maps, and upgrade Mapsource to the last available version, ignoring Basecamp?
Thanks, Ena

Starting with the first part of your problem. 1.) Hopefully the Nuvi 200's battery is still in good condition for the voyage. 2.) You can upgrade from Mapsource 6.13.7 to the latest (6.16.3) and it should still work with your exisiting maps. 3.) NT maps and even the newer variety can work on a Nuvi 200, as I have managed to get them to work on my brother-in-law's unit that he does not want to part with (sentimental reasons) even after his first one (also a Nuvi 200) was stolen with his bakkie. The app that is needed to do this is MapReverseConverter which is found here. A detailed explanation of how it works is also available on the site. You would need to install the BaseCamp software initially to get the maps registered (subject to further investigation).
Hope this helps.

Re: Updating maps; sticking to Mapsource.
I actually think that the Nuvi 200 can run on NT Maps Out the Box (Please Correct me if I am Wrong).
I Think Garmap SSA 2013.1 will work fine on Nuvi 200
Best move is to buy the DVD and continue from there.

The Nuvi 200 is fully compatible with NT maps. Have been running mine on NT since it was introduce in fact the Nuvi 200 was included in the Garmap list as units to use NT.

Thanks a lot to all of you . Tomorrow I will look for the DVD and buy the license.
And then take it from there.

Re: Updating maps; sticking to Mapsource.
There is nothing in the universe that makes me feel more stupid than The Nuvi/Mapsource/SA Streetmaps.
I downloaded and installed Mapsource (6.16.3)- that was the easy part. But in the process my 2009 maps became locked, both on my PC and on the GPSr and would not unlock regardless of what I tried. I guess that is not important - I will buy the new maps as soon as the storms in the Cape subsides; and get a licence for them. My question is - If I install the new maps from the DVD will it use Mapsource from my PC or will it install Basecamp and link the new maps to that? Or is there some way in which I should tell it what to do ?

Re: Updating maps; sticking to Mapsource.
The DVD will install Basecamp. Once the map set is un locked and installed installed on the computer it will be assessable on both Basecamp and MapSource. In fact I have both 6.13.7 and 6.16.3 plus Basecamp on my laptop. On basecamp and 6.16.3 I can access all the Garmap maps from 2008 to 2012.3 and City Navigator. City Navigator though is not listed in 6.213.7

Re: Updating maps; sticking to Mapsource.
Ena the updating to 6.16.3 should not have locked the 2009 maps but you can unlock them again by visiting the Garmap website and downloading the 25 digit unlock code. Open Mapsource, click on utilities, unlock regions and add. Copy the unlock code to the required box which should unlock the maps again.

Re: Updating maps; sticking to Mapsource.
Jan,
Thank you for the info. I'm sure I did something silly to cause the lockup. I tried to fix it, but the unlock codes I could find were all for 2008 maps and did not work - the 2009 map was a free upgrade that I got in 2009 after buying the GPS in 2008. And the maps are now working again - at least in the GPSr. I was sure that the maps were installed on the SD card in my GPS, but since the mishap I could not find any maps at all in the GPS. Yet, when I took out the SD card tonight the maps in the GPS re-appeared and are working perfectly !! I will leave my PC with the maps in their locked state until I have a new DVD lest I "break" something else.
