They even made that easy for you on the lasts version of express click on settings>advanced>install at the bottom of the next screen. You can do it at the same time as you update or at a later stage. See my screen shots

Steve make sure you have version 2.2.14 of Garmin express installed. Versions prior to this did not support that option. I had to delete (uninstall) the older version before the new one correctly installed. Here is the download link

Directly from Garmin

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Garmin Express is designed to be the one-stop shop for updating maps, updating software, managing favorites, and much more. With the release of Garmin Express version 2.2.14, the ability to install mapping to the computer is available for users who require this feature. Installing the maps to the computer allows the use of the maps in other Garmin software such as MapInstall, MapSource, and BaseCamp. It is not necessary to permanently install the maps to the computer, when updating a GPS device, so most users will not use this feature.

To install the maps to the computer:
1.Open Garmin Express
2.Click device
3.Click advanced
4.Select the version of the maps required ◦The Map Install Location allows the user to choose the folder where the maps will be permanently installed. Click browse to change the default location

5.Click install
Proceed to the updates area of Garmin Express to see the progress of the installation. When the update is successful, the maps can be used in the other compatible Garmin software.

It would really depend on which model you go for. The more expensive models with all the bells and whistles will take some time to recover the purchase price by way of map update cost but the Nuvi 42 which sold for R999 a few weeks ago at one of the chain stores would offset the purchase price within 3 years.
