At that price, I'm sure they will also make sure there are updates and look into extending the range of devices capable of using it. Let's hope they will follow through with that.

P.S. I think you are going to need a hefty SD card to store it on (4GB and bigger).

According to the website the file need 2.5 gb free space. So I agree with the 4gb SD card. The down side is that you can only download it to the device and not install it on your computer.

Considering the R/$ exchange rate, that is pretty good and yes, it can be a bit cheaper. But will it suffer the same fate as the DEM that was too pricey that no-one was really interested in owning it, and the updates being abandoned due to a lack of interest on the part of public? I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Garmin wants to sell "Outdoor Handheld Devices" as well as Nuvi's
Nuvi's are cheap and are delivered with a "Free Detailed Map".
Outdoor Handheld Devices are expensive and are usually delivered with only a basemap.
This Map is for the "Outdoor Handheld Devices" It has Full High Resolution Dem and Topo Features, Tracks, Depth of Lakes etc etc
When you consider the high price of an outdoor device such as the Montana 650 - 1500 Rand is a small price to pay for the Map
In fact Garmin could not sell these devices in this region without having this map.
(Rumour has it that it does have a Copyright to Tom Tom amongst other Copyrights)

Montana™ 650

So, if I have done my sums correctly, a spend of around R9000.00 will have you kitted out with a Montana 650 and the Topo Southern Africa 2013 Pro to be able to go hiking in the Drakensberg without getting lost. Nah, just give me my watch, a sunny day and I'll be good to go.

One would expect to when you pay R7500 for a GPSr to receive more that just a World base map. At least the choice of CN Street maps or Pan Africa Topo or lastly Topo Southern Africa 2013 Pro which ever you prefer or as the most suitable for your intended use included in the price. Shurely the cost difference to the top unit in the Nuvi range which include Life time Map updates can not be justified if no map set is included.

I would also want bang for buck if I am paying that kind of money for a GPSr. The problem would come in when Garmin would have to do custom orders and things then take longer to get to the buyer. Garmin are actually clever and use Ford philosophy:- Mass produce and let the customer customise according to his/her needs. Pity. But it's to Garmin's advantage, as they don't have to make a certain number of units preloaded ahead of release and then sit with 1 or 2 preloaded stocks (ie Pan Africa TOPO or TOPO Southern Africa 2013 PRO) that don't move.
