Mio Moov 560

#2048

Post by Sly1980 »

Hi guys

I have had a Mio Moov 560 for over 2 years now and during this time, I've installed one map update on it. Since then, the Mio site says there is an SA map update but when its selected, we are given information to contact Mobitrack for the upgrade. I've contacted them once, it would cost me about R700 (if my memory serves me right) to upgrade my device software and maps with them. I dont know if I'm the only one but this sounds rather ridiculous given that I paid slightly more for the device brand new.
Nevertheless, on a recent trip to Durban, it worked fine all the way up but started some sort of nonsense on the way back, it cannot find location constantly when in the vehicle, when I remove it from the vehicle, it seems to work fine (although I've only tried this twice). Is this thing now cooked? Should I not bother and just turf it? Is there any way of me updating the firmware? I have also seen that it may be able to run alternative mapping that runs on WinCE, would it be possible to do this and where do I even start? There is a lot of info on other sites internationally but not really for the Moov 560 unless the same applies to all Moov 500 series devices.
Lastly, does this thing have the worst touch screen or is it only me device? It is non-responsive and sometimes, it will select an adjacent letter instead of the one selected, it has been like this since new, just wondering. Anyone with this type of device share your experiences with me please...

Welcome to the Forum Sly. We never had any query from a Mio user before so let's hold thumbs that some Mio user read about your problem and come to your rescue. The R700 for a map update is about double what Garmin charges for the Gamap range of map updates which would include all subsequint updates for the year. On the new models the purchase price include lifetime map updates of the City Navigator maps installed there.

Hi Sly and welcome to the forum,

The underlying principle of installing Garmin to work on a WinCE device will stay pretty much the same and the only thing that will change is the mapset you will upload to the WinCE device. What is basically happening, is that you are running (I stand to be corrected) Garmin Mobile XT for PC on a device that uses a severely cut down version of Windows for an operating system. The newer TomToms (ie. the Start 20 etc.) use a cut down Linux as an OS. That said, you should now be able to get going to install the necessary software (application and mapset) to the device to get it to work with Garmin. It may take hours of frustration, but it may be rewarding in the end. I will never forget when I got my Nokia E90 to work with Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian. The sheer reward of being able to do it. Hope I have inspired you to give it a try along with the school fees you are bound to pay in the process.
