Nuvi 3490 not recognized by Mac
The Nuvi 3490 does not show in the Mac''s Finder. I have connected it by USB cable direct (no hub) to the Mac. The SD card however, in the Nuvi does show in Finder.
Any body else has this problem and what is the solution? I googled the problem but can't find any solution.

Re: Nuvi 3490 not recognized by Mac
I have looked on the Garmin Website and found this I am sure you have tried most of what is listed here but at the bottom is their Technical support contact detail.
Why is my Garmin USB device not recognized by my Mac?
10/26/2012
Several reasons prevent a Mac computer from recognizing a Garmin USB device. Check the following items to allow proper communication from the Mac to the Garmin device:
◦Ensure the Mac computer meets the minimum OS X requirements for the computer. As a general rule, OS X 10.5.8 and higher with an Intel-based processor is required for the Garmin software.
◦Check the device and physical connection:1.Verify the cable being used is a USB data cable as some cables only provide power to charge through the USB cable, and these charging cables will lack the ability to communicate with the Mac
2.Verify the device is connected directly to the Mac. Avoid connecting the device to a USB hub, keyboard, or USB port on the monitor
3.Verify the cable is connected to the Garmin device and not to the power cradle for the device
4.Verify the Garmin device is fully powered on
5.Try an alternate USB port on the computer
6.Disconnect any other devices from the USB ports on the Mac
7.Restart the Mac
◦Try connecting the Garmin USB device to another computer.
After checking the above, the Garmin USB device should be detected by the Mac computer. If the Garmin device is still not recognized, please contact Product Support: http://www.garmin.com/us/support/contact

Re: Nuvi 3490 not recognized by Mac
Nuvi 3490 has 2 Modes to connect to USB
MTP Mode (Yellow Icon) and Mass Storage Mode (White Icon)
Have you tried both modes ?
To Switch press center of round Speedo Button for +- 10 Seconds
Nuvi will go to developer diagnostics
Choose MTP Menu and Switch to Mass Storage Mode (MTP is default mode)

Re: Nuvi 3490 not recognized by Mac
Thanks Joe. I've tried your suggestion but it stays invisible on the computer. All that shows in Finder is the SD card in the Nuvi. Basecamp, however, can read the Nuvi.
The reason I want to see the 3490 in Finder (Explorer on Windows PC) is to delete all the files pertaining to routes. I can not find any way on the 3490 to delete all the routes in bulk. The only option I have is to delete each route separately which take ages if one has plus/minus 30 routes in the Trip Planner.

Unfortunately I am a Mac user. My older Nuvi's all worked fine on the Mac.

Re: Nuvi 3490 not recognized by Mac
Over here https://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/ you can download a Mac OSX USB debug kit which can be used to debug USB Device drivers. Maybe it would to some use to help you solve your problem. When I updated the software and maps on my friend's Quest II my laptop did not recognise it and I had to download the driver for that model directly from Garmin before I could do it. I am not all that clued up regarding Mac computers but this look like a driver problem to me. I know that each time I connected a new GPSr unit to my Laptop I have to wait for the drivers for that model to install first before I could continue.

Re: Nuvi 3490 not recognized by Mac
Thanks Jan. Will try that one. The old Nuvi's always came with a installation CD to install the various USB ports. Nowadays that CD is lacking.
