TOPO Southern Africa 2013 PRO

Discussion of the maps available in South Africa in the various sub-folders: Garmap, Navteq, T4A, OSM, etc.
More sub-folders will be created as we go along and the need arises.

There is no Computer Version (MapSource Version) of this map available.(Nada) Could come in the future! Who Knows !
Best option is buy SD Card Version and You can use it with any supported device.
To View the Map in BaseCamp you can use a device connected USB to the computer or pop the SD card into a SD Card reader/writer and it will also work.
you can also copy the files from the SD card onto an Empty USB flash Drive and Basecamp will also see the Map.
The only problem is that Basecamp Address Search when using connected devices Sucks BigTime and you can't print your Maps.
Garmin is only giving Mapsource Version for LM Customers and CDROM customers. (Locked to UnitID of Course)
Another thing that Sucks about this Map and Others is that there is not an Upgrade Option (LM) Available.
Buy once forever and pay Full price everytime you need to UPgrade.

So, is this the end of the road for my NUvi 500 and Topo and Rec and MapSource? If so, what are the alternatives?

I spoke to Garmin Technical support this morning. Regarding cost of future upgrades, when you purchase it on a SD card, the licence is fixed to the card and you will have to buy a new card at the full price. Obviously the SD card is not licenced to a specific unit and you are free to use it on different units. When you purchase and download the map set it will be unlocked to a specific unit and the normal Garmin upgrade policy and cost will apply. The download will be through Garmin Express and you will be able to exercise the option to have it installed on your computer at the same time. The Map set is compatible with the units listed on the website only. A request to expand this to the sport and fitness units has been send through but no guarantee is given. Units like the Nuvi 500 and others that has been discontinued does not feature in any plan for future inclusion in the list of compatible units. They will still be compatible with Garmap and CN street maps.

Hi all,

Thanks for the continued supply of info here about this product. Now forum members and visitors can make informed decisions. I know I would look at it if I had the means to get a Garmin Trail device. This info could prove invaluable and I would encourage all to keep it up, as this is what we want from the forum and what the forum should be.

Thanks for all the info - just want to to make sure I understand this correct. If i go for the downloaded version, then I will have a map set linked to my unit, with the option of having a copy in basecamp on my pc/mac (ie. don't have to connect my unit to view the map set in basecamp - and problem of searching for something in the map set). Also come upgrade time next year you will probably be able to upgrade at reduced price?

If this is the case, then this is the option for me!
Oregon 450 - small, compact, 2xAA batteries lasts, good display, all the necessary technical specs!

Used for: Going on holiday where there is no tarred roads, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Geocaching, Sailing, Running(sometimes) and offcause in the car...

Although the Garmin website give contrary information regarding the installation on your computer the techie I spoke to at Garmin assured me that the download will be through Garmin express and you will be able to, through the advance option of the programme , use the option of have the map set installed on your computer during the download. Upgrades will be according to the Garmin upgrade policy at a slightly discounted rate, not to be confused by the Garmap upgrade policy which is at a completely different rate. It may be to our advantage for someone to verify the information given to me with Garmin.

I see that you can now buy this map for the Zumo 660 and Zumo 350

Zumo's are essentially Nuvi's for Motorcycle use with extra features and extra connectivity.
Using that rational I see no reason why it cannot be used in a Nuvi that supports DEM

Garmin will however not allow you to buy this map for Nuvi (Not yet anyway!)

Anybody have any idea why the Oregon 300 is not listed as a supported device?

Or is it just because the 300 is no longer produced?

Thanks.
