What is ironic and a bit outdated, is the fact that RDS is used to relay the information back to the subscriber's GPSr, when in fact GPRS can be used to send the info when cellphone towers proliferate the countryside. Hopefully this spurs a genius thought with a designer to look into a new way to get the data to the end user timeously.

Also the dependency of a GPSr on satellite signals is also slowly becoming archaic. I have used geolocation on a Galaxy S3 with just a 3G signal and found it to be as accurate as a standalone GPSr. For those who wonder, MTN, Vodacom, Cell C and 8ta won't openly acknowledge the fact that your cellphone coordinates can be triangulated by pinging the phone from 3 different cellphone towers to get a set of coordinates to within metres of the actual location.

This technology exists purely for the purpose of EXTREME emergencies. Due to the increase in prank 911 calls in America (Yes, that big green beautiful place over the seas), it has been legislated that all cellphones can be tracked when making emergency calls, in an attempt to cut down on hoax call perpetrators.

My medical aid has a system where you register your cell number with them on their 911 emergency service. Your are given a emergency number something like *120*...........# (number censored for obvious reasons) With the number allocated a speed dial position when dialled you are connected to the ambulance service who have your profile with all the necessary information available on their system. You only have to state your emergency and location. The beauty of the system is that if you are unable to speak due to extensive injuries or other medical problems all you need to do is keep the phone on and the dispatcher will triangulate your position and send an ambulance out.

Since this technology can be used to find a person in the event of an emergency and since cellphone towers can send data about their location, this technology can be used to transmit traffic information more effectively than the RDS that can be beset with signal problems due to propagation caused by weather and tall buildings in the city.
