Nuvi Problem

#3025

Post by Montana »

All of a sudden I experience a problem connecting the Garmin to my computer. I get the following message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". Then it gives me choices like Initialize, Ignore, Cancel. All my maps and waypoints are gone too. I've using the same computer with previous connections.

Another problem is that the computer only sees the SD card in the Nuvi and not the Nuvi itself.

Any advice?

Maps and waypoints gone, are that noticeable with the unit just switched on and not plugged into the PC?
Mac, have you tried it on a Windows machine?

Does not sound good, but go for a hard reset on the device first.

All maps and waypoints are gone connected or not connected to mac. The problem seems to be that the Mac does not see the Nuvi. It only sees the SD card in the Nuvi.

I have tried it on another Mac and it also does not see the GPS. Unfortunately I do not have a PC. I have used and connected the Nuvi many times in the past to the Mac without any problem.

I have also saved the Mass Storage as recommended by Garmin and also your suggestion to hard reset it but still the same problem.

Does the internal Nuvi storage use MS Dos? I can try to reformat the internal storage to MS Dos but would not like to do it if Garmin uses their own type of operating system.

Rather phone Navworld at 021-510 0224 / 021-510 8112, before you brick your device.

I phoned Navworld and they are of the opinion that the internal HD has packed up. As I need a GPS urgently I'm going to buy a 55LM. Hope I made the right choice as that model is not even listed/discussed on this forum.

Thanks for your assistance.

The 55lm is an update of the 52lm which in turn was an update of the 50. I have been using the 52 lm for more than a year now. Although is just a basic model without the bells and whistles of the more expensive models I would recommend it. I updated the maps and RHD on a 55lm recently for a friend of mine and the only difference I noticed were a few changes to the menue's and a few features added.

Thank you for the advice Jan. I use the Route Planner frequently on the 3490 i.e. transfer routes from Basecamp to the 3490 (Departure point - via - via - Destination). Has the 55LM the same route planning facility?

I had a quick look at the owners manual. It does not seem that you would be able to plan and download a trip on the computer but it has a "Trip planner" build in with quite a few interesting features available to you. You can save your trip for future use. Download the manual from Garmap and have a look before you decide.
