Clean up of POI's

#3882

Post by neillliebenberg »

I have noticed on my GPS and on Basecamp that there are many redundant POI's listed (Businesses, Restaurants, etc.). While I suspect that the updating of this information is not the responsibility of this forum, is there an entity or body that we could notify of changes to POI's in our immediate areas and help to unclutter this info?

Poi like Restaurants, Atm's etc are embedded in the mapset.
You can contact Garmin to notify them of any errors below.

I may be mistaken but I think that Garmin load these Poi when you update CN to a file named Tracks4Africa_2016.2_Southafrica.gpi where 2016.2 would be the current version of you mapset.
You could copy this file to your computer and use GPS Babel (download it from http://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html) to convert it to .gpx format, edit and then convert it back to .gpi again, using either GPS Babel or PoiLoader. Replace the original file on the GPS with your edited one. The snag is that next time you update your maps the unwanted POI will be back but it can be easily replaced with a saved edited copy form your computer. I have not tried doing this but it should work. You can give it a try and report back to us. Just remember to save and unedited copy on your computed so that you can restore if something goes wrong.
Below a screen shot of folder on my gps. The blue circled file PoiLoader.gpi is the RHD files
Note that each time the maps are updated 3 files are created a .gma file, gpi file and a ,unl file. the .gpi file is deleted and replaced during the update but the other 2 remain.

I have just been thinking. We have Anja T4A as a registered member and If the file I mentioned above is the source of the Garmin POI we could contact her and pass on information that is either incorrect. irrelevant or dated for their information and action. May save a bit of time if the route to get the information to them is shortened.

I have downloaded the POI file from the unit to my computer. However when I try to convert it to a GPX format, I get an error message on GPSBabel (See attachment). Could this be that Windows 10 is not compatible with the software, or am I doing something wrong

No GPS Babel works perfectly with Windows 10. More likely that the file is encrypted. In the article I read earlier regarding converting back to gpx using GPSBabel it was mentioned that encrypted gpi files will be problematic. I converted one of my RHD.gpi files to .gdb and it went smoothly. I will play around with it tomorrow and see but I think it is encrypted. I am using Windows 10 so the only difference is that I converted to .gdb
