If were still using Windows XP I would agree that there is no need for any backup. Since the introduction of Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and now Windows 10 we lost the stability of windows XP. I for one had to do a full system restore at least 3 times with the new operating systems specifically Windows 8.1. Restoring all my programs and some of the data like maps took a lot of bandwidth and cost a few pennies. Not to mention the effort to find unlock codes for some of the software like WinZip, Office and a few others. Each time you delete something you leave some remnants of the program in the registry which is some of the reasons the system sometimes crashes. My policy is that I have 1TB of disc space why delete something you may need later on and may just cause you some problems later on if you delete it. When I do delete something like some of the freeware that is supposedly free but come with some hidden hazards I use Revo Uninstaller which remove the registry entries during the uninstall process. I also often still use Garmap DEM, Topo and Street maps those maps still have better detail in certain areas than the Current CN Maps. But then it is just me. My Daughter call me a Hoarder.

Update last night from 2017.1 with Express.
Gone is Junction view on my 3790 today on my trip to Joburg.
Garmin, oh Garmin. Really?

I updated while still in Knysna. Used it on Saturday and Sunday on our way back. All functioned well Junction View worked it even showed me the flyover on the R30 at the Verginia flyover which I can remember it doing previously. What I did notice is a slight increase in size of the files stored on the laptop form 218 to 223mb. Try installing it again Frans it could be Garmin express acting up again. Perhaps Map updater?

Map updater wants you to use Express.
I installed an old junction view file (D3529160A - 9890kb) and altered the GarminDevice.xml file to have Junction view back.

I reinstalled 2017.2 with MapInstall this morning, and now the Junction View is back on (latest?) version (D3529190A - 9931kb.
Displaying correctly as far as can be seen.

Thanks Frans. Maybe Phillip should try to reinstall 2012 as well. I t look like they left some files off the update and now corrected it. Did you use the updated express or still the previous version.

Hi guys, Phillip. Frans, you are referring to an old junction view file, presumably of a map set that you had backed up on your pc. I unfortunately, deleted my previous map 2017.10 from my pc. I tried to open my Garmin Device.xml file with excell, but it gives me an error, it will only open a schema based on the xml, which is not helping, and also it does'nt give me the internet option to open on line. I've re installed the map set 2017.2 to my device but there is no dem option

Hi Dasilvarsa, Phillip. Thank you so much for your help with the DEM. img file. Downloaded it and installed it on my Nuvi, and wella works like a bomb. This file is now stored on my external hard drive for future use if Garmin does not include the DEM file with future map updates. Regards

I scratch around the net regarding the missing gmapdem.img file. It look like the files It seem like a file named something like Dxxxxxxx.img is included in the map set. During the install process Garmin express rename the file to gmapdem.img when it recognize the unit compatible with Dem overlay display. Bearing in mind the number of map sets world wide that Garmin Express have to cater for and the frequency of express and the number of units models it has to recognize updates errors can happen.

Jan, I have a nüvi® 3590LT and purchased Maps for Live and have tried to obtain the latest maps directly from the Garmin website with Map Install as Express just fail and state I must use Map Install with my specific GPS. The last time mine updated was with 2016.2. Do you know who can I contact to assist.
