Hi Robsan,

I take it you are referring to the image file located in the garmap folder on your GPSr unit. On the newer models (Nuvi 2XXX, etc.), these files (gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img) are located in a totally different place. That being the case, whatever you do, don't unnecessarily delete the file. This contains all the mapsets bundled into one large file that the GPSr reads/looks for when powering up. If this is missing, it's like having a compass with a magnet attached to it.

Hi Robsan and all forumites,

The location of the gmapprom.img (CN Maps) is located in:-

X:\.System (where X denotes the drive letter of the Nuvi when connected to a laptop/PC).

Also note the dot before the name of the System folder to denote that it's hidden to prevent accidental deletion of data contained in it (amongst others the dreaded .gma file installed by the CN map updates and the associated .unl file). Below is a picture denoting such:-
Nuvi 2XXX map location.jpg
Garmin's method to the madness was to prevent accidental data loss and software hacks. I will try to see if I can screen captures of the Nuvi 2XX variety and post them here too.

When additional maps (gmapsupp.img) are installed to the device, these are saved in X:\Map and are activated/deactivated through the device settings on the GPSr. Hope this helps.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Hi Darryl,
The reason why I asked that this file is using a lot of space which leaves me with about 3% free space, would this slow down
my GPS which is a Nuvi 2300 Wide is there a way to free more space on my Nuvi? :?:
regards
Robert

Hi Rob

Those image files are large, especially the Garmap Topo & Rec map.

If you are using Streetmaps or Topo you can reduce the file size by highlighting only the area that you normally drive around and send that to the unit, using MapSource.
If you never go far up north, for instance, select from Namibia downwards to include our northern most province.

You can also delete Language and Help Files that you do not use.
(Or cut and paste them to a safe place on your PC's hard drive.)
If you don't understand Russian or French, it is of no use to have their Language & Help files on the unit.
This is normally the first thing that I do with a new GPSr as it saves some space.

I know that some people also delete the basemap, especially on the older units.
That I would advise, however, to keep safe on your hard drive just in case you need to replace it should the unit work better with it.
UNITS: nüvi 660; nüvi 3790LT; Montana 600; eTrex Legend HCx; eTrex Venture 1MB mem and only a Basemap......

Hi Robert,

You can also look at getting a 2/4/8GB microSD card and install the mapsets onto there. The prices of these units have dropped dramatically and I suspect you may only get the 4 and 8GB units. That way you can also play with the mapsets on the microSD card without accidently damaging mapsets on the GPSr.
