Install OSM/Download Maps on Nuvi 500

These maps are starting to looking interesting now that I can use one on BaseCamp.

The next question is, will my Nuvi 500 support the OSM Maps, and if so, how do I download or install the map to my Nuvi 500.

Should this be discussed in another thread, please point me in the right direction.

Shaun this is the thread to discuss all things related to OSM.

I have downloaded and tried Africa South OSM Topo.

Installed it on a SD card using Mapinstall. Basecamp do divert you to Mapinstall for the installation in any case. The process is the same as for any of the Garmin/Garmap maps. I installed it on the SD Card at the rime because I thought it would be easier to get rid of if it dit not pay out. I can sat that it is working perfectly accept for the loss of junction view and all the other fancy features build into the CN map series.
I noticed that most of the OSM websites have various download options to cater for the different PND brands. Julst make surethat you download the Garmin option and the Nuvi 500 should be happy.

I need to look into the detail (using BaseCamp) first, before I download.

My initial review indicates that my Topo Maps have more to offer, even though they are becoming outdated.

R 265.00 for Topo Lite might also be a good option, but I need to look at the maps.

I have used T4A, and these maps also come up short.

There were tracks to Flamingo Lodge (Angola) which were not on the map.

In the case of my aged Topo Maps, there were tracks on the map that could not be found on the ground. Costs us one and a half days stuck in the black cotton soil (only 800m) and saved us another 2km of black cotton soil had we continue with the route.

I have downloaded a trial version of Expert GPS.

This is an application, and the reality of a GPS Navigation system, is that it is only a good as the accuracy and content of the underlying maps.

I would need to spend more time on Expert GPS, to see how it can add more value. Right now BaseCamp is adequate.
