Upgrading forum software.

#5491

Post by fugglefeet »

Hi all,

During the passage of this week, it became apparent that the forum software is in need of upgrading. In the process, some of the fancy stuff (features) will be lost in the process. This is a 2 stage process and will require the software to be upgraded from its current version to phpBB 3.2. Once this is done, the latest version (phpBB 3.3) will be installed on the forum and then a look around will be done to see if some of the nice stuff we have gotten used to, is available for the newest version of software. This will be done during quiet times of the forum, to reduce the impact of the upgrade on the members.

Thanks.

Darryl

P.S. Folks will notice the forum has a somewhat "vanilla" appearance. This is in preparation for the changeover to the newer versions of forum software.

Hi all,

Stage 1 of the upgrade process has been done and some of the functionality may have been lost. Bear with the procedure and if there is anything that needs attention, mail me with a description of the problem. This is all part of the process and thank you to everyone for their patience.

Hi all,

As we well know, the ability to connect a GPS to our PC's and update the Road Hazard Data from the forum was also due to come to an end (due to Garmin no longer providing support for the Communicator plugin). Add to this the fact that Internet Explorer will be retired from mid June 2022 and the plugin was heavily reliant on IE. The consequence of this is that the relevant sections previously used to update a GPSr via the forum, have been removed and alternatives are/will be in place to still utilise the RHD information updated monthly.

P.S. Technology still has its drawbacks, since you can't warm your feet in a microwave.

Hi all,

For the sake of safety, I have added two features to the forum to make it difficult for spammers to wreak havoc. These features were used on the forum before while using the previous version of forum software. They are unobtrusive to the regular users, but also only come into full swing when registering on the forum. They are:-

Ajax Registration Check
Stop Forum Spam

There is also a hidden spambot checker that isn't part of the forum, but works independently to protect it.

Hopefully we won't have intrusions during the transition to the newer software later on.
