Noeman GPS forum

#192

Post by Hennieb »

Before the creation of this forum, I registered on the above mentioned forum in an attempt to maintain some degree of knowledge sharing. However, I have never realy felt at home on that forum, regardless of the fact that it covers a comprehensive range of subjects. The question I sit with currently - Is it worthwile for me to continue to be a member of that forum or do I feel more at home here? I know there are other forum members that also joined the Noeman forum, do they feel the same or are they planning to remain members of that forum as well?

I feel very comfortable with a forum that has no strings attached. It irritates me when I want to follow a link supplied to something or somewhere and the system then requires that I first complete a "questionnaire" requiring me to divulge personal details or other information regarding myself.Throw in a few pop-ups and advertising for "other" websites and I will remove that forum form my bookmarks. I think our original forum spoiled me and maybe I have become a grumpy old man. I presume that belonging to a forum is very much a personal thing and it greatly depends on what you expect to gain from belonging there and what you personally can contribute. Lastly and not the least I like to be amongst friends

It's really up to the Individual.
If you plan on learning a lot more about the inner workings of the Garmin such as:
Creating your own maps from tracks.
Changing how your maps look on the GPS. (Editing the TYP file)
Learning about Hidden Features in your GPS (Easter Eggsand more  )
Advanced use of your Cellphone
etc etc etc
Then Noeman.org is worth while being a member of.
Then Again there is the  DARK  side of Noeman.org ???
That bothers some people.
I've been a member there for a long time and a lot of answers that I posted on the EX Garmap forum came from there.
Another thing to remember is that the status of this forum is one of "temporary".

I don't think too much emphasis should be placed on our temporary status Joe. I think I speak for all involved with the establishment and development of this forum that status changed to permanent as long as it is feasible. Financially the burden so far has been solely on Darryl for which we are very grateful and there are others that are willing to pitch in as well. I am sure when the need arises we will find ways to generate the necessary funds to keep going.

Jan, you've beaten me to it, but let me add a little bit.

"Temporary" will very much depend on the members of this forum and it will stay up as long as they want it to be.
(The word temporary has been removed from the forum's name days ago already.)

A lot of time and effort has gone in behind the scenes to create a home from home and we do not plan at this stage to loose, once again, the contributions of members.

Let this rather be a challenge to build it bigger and better, so canvas your friends, enemies, foes, in-laws or whatever to join and let us start building the walls and roof - we've put the foundation in place.

The way I see it there are various reasons then to either continue or discontinue membership to the Noeman forum. Reason 1 would typically be for the "advanced" user to gather more information and to be able to change the way a GPSr works or display a map. Reason 2 would then be for a more "general user" with general questions. Both valid reasons. A typical reason for ending membership is adverts being displayed or not having a feeling of being 'at home". Mmmm, makes me think.

The last three times I visited the Noeman website my virus protection displayed a warning and then a message that it was removing software that was downloaded to my laptop. On further investigation it showed ad ware removed on that date and time. Anyone else experienced this.

Jan, I did not experience this. But then I must add that I have not visited that site since the birth of this site.
