A South African forum for Global Positioning System.......................
So luckily this forum is NOT an International English Forum, therefor I think any of the 11 official South African languages will do, choice is every individual forumite's own.
We can't discriminate, can we?

For those, like me, who is not fluent in the Portuguese language my answer to Joe above was that he is free to post in any language he wants to. But having said that it is the duty of the moderators to keep the forum free of spam. Any post that is written in a language tha we cannot read or understands may be deleted as spam. I have asked my fellow moderators to make a decision as to our language policy and any thoughts you have regarding this will be taken in considerations so feel free to enter into the debate.

Hi all,
Joe does have a point there, as there are Portuguese/Italian/French/Russian/Indian/etc. speaking South African's. Let me have a look if there is a translation tool for the forum software. All we can do for now is ask that the poster's (if posting in their native tongue), to see if they can provide as best as possible an English translation for the benefit of the other forum members.
Darryl
@Joe:- Thanks for the suggestion and maybe we can move this to the wishlist.

I respect your opinion regarding what you said above, but why then only for the benefit of the english speaking people. Then surely posting in english must also be translated to Afrikaans for the benefit of the Afrikaans speaking forumites. You might get a shock as to the total amount registered Afrikaans speaking persons on this forum that are now possibly gonna get forced to speak in English.
Or perhaps just wave goodbye!
It's funny, since the start of this forum, language was not an issue. What suddenly changed this relaxed atmosphere? Are we moving back to the strict old Garmap Forum rules perhaps?

Re: O que é a língua oficial deste Fórum?
I suppose any person may post something or ask a question in any language. The problem lies in getting no sensible response to the posting/question that is in a language that is not understood by most forumites. Trying to translate anything posted in a language other than English to English through an automated translator is not realy worth much. We have all seen Google translate and its pitfalls. My suggestion would be to have a guideline (not rule) that one should post and answer in English (Queens English not required) and that we try to steer clear of burning a person that made spelling errors and grammatical errors in postings. I have said many a time before - as an Afrikaans speaking person I use English only as a self defence mechanism and find it problematic in getting past the 'yes' or 'no' of English. The fact that the forum started in English should be regarded as an indication that we may have persons outside RSA also reading postings, or maybe even joining the forum.

Re: O que é a língua oficial deste Fórum?
Hi all,
We are currently sitting with a dilemma around language and what is the forum's accepted language of conversation? We can put this to a vote and achieve nothing or we can provide a tool (Google Translate) that can attempt to translate the topics, forums and posts into the end user's language of choice and possibly lose the "egte Suid Afrikaanse" flavour of the forum.
'n Goeie meerderheid lede is tweetalig en kan in 2 van ons landstale praat, skryf en lees. Dus is die forum in daardie opsig eg Suid Afrikaans en ek dink al die lede sal saamstem dat ons dit 'n tuiste vir ons wil maak. Ons nooi ook ander taalsprekende belanghebbendes om aan te sluit en ons (soos Jan verduidelik het) kyk verby die spel en grammatika foute, met die oog daarop om hulp aan te bied waar dit nodig is.

Hi All,
On a further note. I have installed language packs that provide a translation of the forum software itself into the language choice of the forum member. It does not provide a translation of the actual forums, topics and posts. This is still either english or afrikaans.

Re: O que é a língua oficial deste Fórum?
What about this !
If the topic was started in English it becomes an English topic and all dialog must be in English (Google Translations Accepted)
If the topic was started in Afrikaans then Everyone must Answer in Afrikaans. (Google Translations Accepted)
Changing the Language within a Topic is not nice.
This would be quite a simple rule to Moderate and would meet the needs of most users.
