TRACKS4AFRICA.GPI on Nuvi40

#909

Post by JacoSteyn »

I recently purchased a Nuvi40, and in the process of ensuring that it is up to date, I saw a file named "TRACKS4AFRICA.GPI' in the POI folder. This file is quite large, being about 100MB. What is it's purpose? Can anyone shed some light on this please? Thanks!

IT is Extra POI (Points of Interest) From Tracks For Africa Company, supplied to you Free by Garmin.
Press Where-To Extras and it should be listed there.
If you don't need it just back it up on your computer and delete it.
You can always put it back.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! (Pun intended!  )
I had a quick glance at it in my Nuvi, and was wondering whether there is a way to see all of the POIs in something like Mapsource of Basecamp?

Hi Jaco,

If the file extension was .gpx, then you could view it in Mapsource or BaseCamp. I am not aware of it being viewable with the .gpi extension. Any thoughts from the other members?

No chance at all. It's encrypted so GPSBabel can not change it to .gpx, csv etc.

Hi Guys,

The t4a_africa_guide_1210.gpi file (the latest v12.10 is about 300Mb) is a file that contains extra POI data. What you see on the Padkos listings (http://tracks4africa.co.za/listings/) can be found on your GPS under extras, if you have the Guide installed, i.e. contact details, opening times (which can be handy if you want to know what time a border control closes), description and in some instances even a photo.

The guide comes pre-loaded on the T4A SD card and is also available upon request to customers that purchased the full map set download link.

For more information about the Tracks4Africa guide, please visit http://tracks4africa.co.za/about/GPS_Travel_Guides/.

Regards,

Anja
