Hi all, for information.....
Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) has warned vehicle owners to carefully check any speed camera-based traffic fines they have received or discover on their banking app. There have been numerous cases of South African drivers being charged for speeding infractions incorrectly, according to JPSA chair Howard Dembovsky. Some time ago I got a speed fine through the post for exceeding the speed limit in a 80kmh zone on the N2 by traveling at 100.5 kmh near a school on the outskirts of a small town. I checked and yes there is a 80kmh zone matching the rough description on the ticket but I remember passing a occupied stoeltjie that day and that the RDS warning came well in time for me to see that I complied.
I compared the track log on the Nuvi 52 with the time stamp on the photo and could pinpoint the location of the stoeltjie and it corresponded 100% with a 100kmh MT in our database. Google street view also confirmed the back ground view on the photo at that point. Back tracing with street view I located where the the 80Kmh zone changed to 100kmh. The tracklog confirmed that I kept well within the 80kmh speed limit up to where it changed to 100kmh and that I we were traveling at 100.3 kmh at the point where the photo were taken.
The next couple of months I received numerous sms's fist just a reminder to pay the fine or face the consequences becoming more and more threatening until I got tired and send them copies of my track log street view images and all the evidence I had that the speed camera were set up in a 100kmh zone and not 80k politely asking if they are sure they did not make a mistake when they issued the ticket as it is obvious that I was traveling in a 100kmh zone at the time.
I never heard from them again, The thing is a often wondered how many motorist got a ticket that day and paid the fine.
