Nuvi 2360 and Toll Roads

#3541

Post by Ben Louw »

My Garmin Nuvi 2360 is loaded with CN Southern Africa NT2015.40. As soon as you activate "Avoid toll routes" the distance to destination increases by an enormous amount and there is no way to alter this.
For example if you select a trip from Warden Free State to Villiers Free State the normal distance increases from 102km to 183km when avoiding toll gates is switched on. The route then takes you via Reitz and Frankfort. Even trying to force it to go via Cornelia the distance increases to 243km.
When selecting this options using other GPS devices like my cell phone or my son's Tom Tom I do not have this problem.
Can anyone please give me advice to try and solve this

Hello Ben, to me the culprit is at the interchange at the N3/R103.Wrong routing calculations there with 2 errors.
2.JPG
The first error should have allowed to proceed on the N3 up to the R34 and then either left or right to avoid the Toll.
3.JPG
The second error should have allowed you to alternatively take the R103 at the interchange. If you selected avoid unpaved roads, then you are on the long route via R714. Unselecting to avoid unpaved roads then take you on that detour to the right to the R103.

There is a lot of wrong classifications of the roads with CN maps, where tar roads are classified as unpaved roads, taking you on long unjustified routes.
See city-navigator-maps/southern-africa-map ... -t592.html
My advise is to never click to avoid unpaved roads.

If the error that I said above regarding the N3 is not at the said interchange, then it must be for sure here

I followed the advice from F Viljoen. There is limited success when disabling "unpaved roads" . When toll roads is enabled driving to Durban is 574 kms. As soon as I select avoid toll roads this distance change to 797km and the routing is not logic at all. You can change settings any way you like there is no success.
Using my son's Tom Tom Go 5000 the distance to Durban is 650 km when avoiding toll roads.
Is there any other mapset available that can be used on the Garmin.
Is there a way when planning a trip to avoid a certain road for example on the road to Durban you want to plan your route avoiding the R74 over Oliviershoek Pass because you are aware of the poor condition of this road.

I have done the same exercise routing from JHB to Durban using MapSource. As you say the routing calculated using CN maps does not make sense at all increasing from 575km to 794km. Using the old Garmap map sets the route increase to 653km and looking at the overall picture it uses the secondary roads one would naturally plan along when you plan to avoid the toll roads on a paper map. The Garmap map sets were compiled on used data supplied under contract from Tomtom. Purely based on the maps sets installed the Tomtom units are currently a very good buy and sure offer you the better route planning and more accurate navigation. We all hoped that the CN maps would quickly catch up in quality with what we had with Garmap but progress have been very slow and I think that Tomtom on the other hand made good progress in catching up on the new features that CN introduced at the switch over.

The 3 routes show 1 Garmap with toll avoidance ticked 2 CN with toll avoidance ticked 3 CN with toll avoidance un-ticked. Garmap give you the same distance. I let the program do its own thing no via points

I am not using Via points at all. :nono:
Those that show is the actual waypoints used to create the start and end of the route.
Scroll to the right at the route tab, then it will also show 2 via points for each route created
