NUVI 500 KEEPS ON RESTARTING

#4232

Post by greenleader »

I visited the Mokala National Park from 11 to 12 Nov 2016. On the morning of of 12th Nov I was driving through an area in the park that were full of " Ysterklip Koppies". Suddenly the GPS restarted ( green bar) and keeped on doing it untill I was in the open veld again. This went on for about 20 mins.

After that it operated as before without any glitches or troubles.

Was this behaviour caused by this "Ysterklip Koppies"? Maybe some of you has an same experience before.

That's weird. Was it a bad dirt road or paved. The shaking when going over a very bad dirt road could cause one of the pins in the USB plug to lose contact momentary which could cause the unit to think it is connected to a computer instead of the 12v power supply in theory. This would only happen if the plug has a lot of free play on a well used unit.
first time I have heard of something like this.
The USB Plug has 5 pins and on the Charger \/ power supply pin 4 and 5 is bridged with a resistor to prevent the unit from going into PC mode when you connect it to a Garmin charger. I once tried the charger of my Parrot hands free device when I misplaced the Garmin charger and found that I had to find the garmin charger to use my nuvi

Anyone with any thoughts on this ?

Jan, it was a dirt road but very good and at that stages I have done about 30kms already that morning on the same type of road. As soon we were out of the koppie-area and on the same type of road, it stopped.
It make sense what you say, but why only there. The access road to the park is a 21km very bad dirt road. You have never seen something like that and there it operated like normal. Anothre funny thing was thar sometimes after the restart, it would go to the main menu and then I choose to " View Map". The map would display a few seconds and then the restart with the green bar as if it is connected to a PC.
Beats me

Martin I can think of no logical explanation for that. If the koppie interfered with the radio signal reception it would have said "lost satellite reception". Lost contact with pin 4 of the USB connection could course e it to go into PC mode but then it would have been along he entire distance of the dirt road and even at a bump in a good paved road. The only thing I can think off is some magnetic interference around the klip koppie effecting the electronics of the GPS receiver. It would most likely have effected your cell phone reception at the time as well but may have gone unnoticed. Maybe someone with technical knowledge regarding magnetic interference on electronic equipment can help us out here.
